Ptolemy's general Scopas marched into the upper region during the winter and subdued the Jewish nation.
The siege having been conducted in a desultory manner, Scopas fell into bad repute and was attacked with all the petulance of youth. . . .
Having conquered Scopas, Antiochus took Batanaea, note Samaria, Abila, and Gadara; and after a while those of the Jews who inhabit the sacred town called Jerusalem submitted to him also. On the subject of this town I have a good deal more to say, and especially on account of the splendour of its temple, but I shall put it off to another opportunity.
According to Hultsch no fragments or extracts of book 17 are preserved.
